The Singapore’s government, after decades-old aversion, decided to
allow two LasVegas style casinos to be built.
The first contract for the first casino was awarded on May the 26th
2006, to America’s Las Vegas Sands, the second contract for Singapore’
s second casino was awarded on December the 8th 2006, to Malaysia’s
Genting International.
According to Singapore’s Prime Minister, the goal is to attract overseas
visitors and to create more jobs. Singapore, a country of 4.3 million
people, wants to stay competitive in the Asian tourist market.
With a price tag in the billions of dollars, the two resort casinos will
feature hotels, theme parks, restaurants and other entertainment
facilities.
The Marina Bay Sands is the tentative name for an Integrated Resort
being developed by Las Vegas Sands at Marina South, Singapore. The
complex is expected to be completed in 2009 and will contain
Singapore's first casino.
Las Vegas Sands has committed to invest S$3.85 billion in the project,
not including the fixed $1.2 billion cost of the 20.6-hectare site itself,
which by most estimates will make it the most expensive casino in the
world. [1] In addition to the casino, other key components of the plan
are three hotel towers with 2,500 rooms, a 200,000-square foot arts
and sciences museum and a convention centre with 1.2 million square
feet of space, capable of accommodating over 52,000 people. The
resort, inspired by card decks, was designed by Moshe Safdie. The
company has promised to create 10,400 jobs for the project, 75
percent of them reserved for Singaporeans.
